Oral care starts at home. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day (two minutes each time) and floss at least once daily. While these steps are key components to keeping your mouth healthy, they are only a small part of a larger picture. Along with taking care of your mouth at home, the ADA recommends that you have two professional cleanings every year. At Our Dentist, we can provide you with the professional dental cleanings, helping you to keep your mouth happy and healthy.
The Importance of Dental Cleanings
Throughout the course of the day, plaque (a sticky film that collects on the surfaces of your teeth) and oral bacteria buildup in your mouth. While they are both naturally occurring, excess amounts can be detrimental to your oral health. They can both irritate your gum tissue, which can lead to gum disease. The acids they produce can cause tooth decay, which leads to cavities. A professional dental cleaning is essential for removing buildup from all surfaces of your teeth, including the hard to reach areas, helping you to maintain optimal oral health.
Care at Home Vs. Professional Care
Visiting the dentist twice a year might not seem like it would make a big difference in the health of your mouth, but these two visits are crucial. When plaque is left to sit on your teeth for too long, it hardens into tartar (or calculus), which cannot be removed with your regular toothbrush. The tools that you have at your disposal in your home are limited. At Our Dentist, we are equipped with the tools and technologies needed to remove even the most stubborn buildup on your teeth, getting them smooth and clean.
How Your Cleaning is Done
Dental cleanings begin with the thorough cleaning of your teeth. Using specialized tools, we scrape plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris from all surfaces of your teeth, including between them and along the gum line. We take the time necessary to remove stubborn deposits and reach the areas that you might not be able to at home
Once we have finished scraping your teeth, we then move on to polishing them. This involves the use of an electric tool and a special dental polish. The polish contains abrasives which help to scrub your teeth clean as the head of the electric tool spins. Flossing is done after polishing. Even if you have already flossed before your appointment, a second session won’t hurt. It will also allow us to remove any polish and other debris that may have found their way between your teeth during your cleaning. A fluoride treatment may be administered, but only if it is necessary.
